  91.       DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THIS SHAREWARE VERSION AND THE
  92.              REGISTERED VERSION OF FIELD GENERAL

  95.      The following is a list of differences between this version
  96. and the version you will receive upon sending in your
  97. registration:
  98.  
  99.      *  This version makes only 5 pro football team characteristic
  100.     files available to users compared to the full 28 of the
  101.     registered version.
  102.      *  Because of the limited number of teams, only short (8 game)
  103.         seasons may be created.
  104.      *  Only the 1992 season stats are included with this version.
  105.      *  The program "PROGAMES.EXE", where all 28 teams compete in
  106.         the same season, is a demo only and does not allow teams 
  107.         run by human players to compete in the seasons it creates.
  108.         Normally, users select which teams should be automated and
  109.         which teams should be run by human players.  In the regular
  110.         version, it is possible for 28 users to compete against one
  111.         another in the same season!
  112.      *  Since there are only 5 teams to choose from, season play
  113.         is restricted to only those 5 teams, so post-season 
  114.         matchups aren't as realistic as in the registered version.
  115.      *  Users have access to only select plays on offense & defense.
  116.         Available plays will be highlighted in white on the help
  117.         menus.  Automated teams have access to all plays.
  118.      *  Users may play short games (7 minute quarters), but not
  119.         regulation length games (15 minute quarters).   
  120.      *  The quick playing modes are disabled.
  121.      *  You do not have a choice of endzone colors.
  122.      *  You cannot change the rate of turnovers generated.
  123.      *  The home field advantage factor is always activated.
  124.      *  Ability to save games is disabled.

  126. This version was created so users can sample the game to see if it
  127. is to their liking.  Please read the file "SHR_WARE.DOC" to learn
  128. more about the Shareware concept.  This is a fully functional game
  129. with some reduction in features to create registration incentive.

  139.           EARNING DISCOUNTS ON FIELD GENERAL UPGRADES

  142.      Once a user becomes a REGISTERED user, the user is eligible
  143. for FIELD GENERAL upgrade discounts for every registration he
  144. brings to rbm software.  To earn a discount on your next FIELD
  145. GENERAL upgrade, a registered user must do the following:
  146. introduce the SHAREWARE version of FIELD GENERAL to a friend,
  147. encourage the friend to register with rbm software, and have the
  148. friend indicate on his FIELD GENERAL registration form that he
  149. heard about the game through the registered user (you).  Name,
  150. address, and user number is needed to verify you as a registered
  151. user.  Once this information is verified, rbm software will send
  152. you a coupon good for $3.00 off your next FIELD GENERAL upgrade!
  153. By getting 8 friends to register, you end up getting back the
  154. original cost of FIELD GENERAL and enough friends who are
  155. registered users to participate in sanctioned rbm software
  156. computer football tournaments (see file "TOURNEY.DOC"), and
  157. rbm software ends up with 8 more registrations!  A winning
  158. proposition for all!

  166.             GETTING STARTED

  169. INSTALLATION:
  170.  
  171.      Welcome to FIELD GENERAL!  FIELD GENERAL is a professional
  172. football simulator programmed for IBM computers and compatibles
  173. with VGA.  A hard disk is needed to unpack and run this software.
  174.  
  175.      The VERY FIRST thing you need to do is make at least one
  176. backup of the FIELD GENERAL distribution disk (2 backups are
  177. preferable).  This simple action will guard against the loss of
  178. information needed to run FIELD GENERAL.  Consult your DOS manual
  179. on how to use DOS's "diskcopy" command if you have any questions
  180. on how to make a backup disk.
  181.  
  182.      FIELD GENERAL'S executable and data files have been archived
  183. so they would fit on the 360K, 5 1/4 inch distribution disk.  These
  184. files are archived in the self-extracting files "ARCHIVE1.EXE",
  185. "ARCHIVE2.EXE", "ARCHIVE3.COM", and "ARCHIVE4.EXE".  To install
  186. FIELD GENERAL, type "install" at the system prompt and follow
  187. directions.  The installation program will unpack and copy all
  188. files to the desired directory on your hard disk.  (NOTE:  Be sure
  189. to instruct the installation program to copy the FIELD GENERAL
  190. files to your hard disk - usually drive C).

  193. RUNNING FIELD GENERAL:
  194.  
  195.       1)  Be sure to read the description for the file
  196.           "SCR_MELT.COM".  This description is found in
  197.           Appendix A in the User's Manual, file "GENERAL.DOC",
  198.           and contains important information which may pertain
  199.           to you and your computer system.
  200.  
  201.       2)  Read all files with the extensions ".DOC" and
  202.           ".TXT", especially the files "GENERAL.DOC"
  203.           and "PLAYS.TXT".  The documentation files with the
  204.           extension ".WP" are doc files in WordPerfect format.
  205.           
  206.       3)  Make sure the hard disk you are running FIELD
  207.           GENERAL from has some extra memory, about 120K, so
  208.           FIELD GENERAL has room to create several files
  209.           during program execution.

  211.       4)  Type "FOOTBALL" at the system prompt to begin play.
